Red Bull ‘Doubull Helix'

"Art is all around us in everything we see. It is and will always be the only constant for me in my life," says Jason Brzezinski. The 29-year-old may be a grownup everybody depends on in his daytime job as a facilities manager, but at night he gives free rein to his inner child, imagination, and artistic talent. Last year, he devoted a month and a half of his spare time to produce an interactive movie camera that was accepted for Red Bull Art of Can in Houston. This year, he devoted about three months to creating another work designed to engage viewers: a five-foot "Doubull Helix" DNA strand. "I wanted to take a scientific approach to this piece and let people have an interaction with it," says Brzezinski from his home in Ohio. "People will have the opportunity to activate a set of black-light tubes and watch the cans glow neon."
The artist recalls that the long gestation period for his work proved interesting, as the piece "began to take on a life of its own" due to expansion and contraction as the seasons changed. But Brzezinski welcomes such challenges. "Creating custom pieces of art for people would be my dream career," he hints. "So, with that said, I am for hire!" |
