Existing comment: B.O.B ("Boyfriend Operating Bionic")
Lisa Lofton, 25, Photographer/Student
Chicago, IL

Twenty-five-year-old Lisa Lofton likes to compete in art competitions, both to utilize skills she's learned in school (she's studying visual communication at Westwood College in Calumet City, Illinois) as well as to push herself to see what she's capable of making. Lofton also likes the idea of having a boyfriend who genuinely cares about her. So for Red Bull Art of Can she decided to create her own "bionic" boyfriend: "B.O.B."

With a lifelong interest in the arts and experience as a veteran of 2007's Art of Can exhibition in Chicago, Lofton put a great deal of thought into B.O.B. "He has a heart-rate level device on his chest to show whether he's in love or lonely," she describes. "As long as he's in love he is fully operational, but if he's lonely he shuts down." The indicators on B.O.B.'s back reflect his levels of emotion, intelligence, humor, and consideration, and "filter switches" make sure the unit doesn't produce lies or disrespect. Lofton lost track of how many cans she used, but guesses it was more than 200. She laughs, "I may need to turn the honesty filter off when I need him to tell me that my butt doesn't look fat in a pair of jeans!"
