Arthur Vaisvilas, 51, Maintenance
Chicago, IL

"You might say that my art background has always been a fine line between the seriousness of life and the humorous side of it," says Chicagoan Arthur Vaisvilas. "I never really put too much thought behind my art. I just enjoy the ability to create art in my own way." Joking that practically the only culture he's known in his 51 years has been "yogurt," the father of three continues, "Seriously, if I do have any art culture, it'll be that I can appreciate a work of art that someone took the time to make."

Vaisvilas may not have a lot of formal training, but he's got plenty of inspiration. He counts his family and friends among his greatest motivators, and music inspires him, too. At the Red Bull Art of Can exhibition in Houston, Vaisvilas showed a painting based on the Ramones, and when the artist found that one critic was unappreciative of the work, rather than being discouraged he created this year's entry in reponse. ("I will not tolerate ignorance," he declares.) It's his first true sculpture, and there are no doubt many more works to come – Vaisvilas is currently in the process of creating his own studio, which he expects will even contain a stage area for performance art.
