Existing comment: Red Bull: The Better Alternative
Cathy Lee, 21, Student
Wayne, PA

Cathy Lee's entry for Red Bull Art of Can is "close to the exact measurements of a real cigarette box, so you technically could use it." But, as the name of her work implies, Lee is not advocating lighting up. Rather, she's intrigued by the possibilities of reusing and recycling materials. "If cans could be reused as products, like a cigarette box, think about the impact it would have on the world," she urges. "The world would be a much better place!"

A 21-year-old senior at Cornell University, Lee supplements her studies in biology with exploration of the arts. She draws and paints and has created scrapbooks, t-shirt designs, crafts, and more. When her schedule allows, she loves to visit museums to soak up a variety of artistic styles. Lee approached her entry somewhat like an arts and crafts project, using basic materials and tools like scissors, Krazy Glue, a ruler, an actual cigarette box, and approximately six cans – discovering in the process that trying to get pre-curved aluminum to lay flat is surprisingly difficult! The results, however, were such a success that Lee has already produced another box for an admiring friend. With satisfaction, the artist comments, "It's practical and environmentally friendly – cans can be re-used!"
