Existing comment: Hula Girl
Annie Sheehan, 38, ELL Teacher and Sign-painting Artist
Kauai, HI

"Hopefully this is the first Hula Girl this contest has seen," says Annie Sheehan, pointing toward her Red Bull Art of Can creation. "I was born and raised in Hawaii and have been surrounded by the unique Hawaiian culture. The most popular recognized image, I feel, is that of a beautiful Hula Girl!" With a killer tan, Sheehan is quite striking herself, but there's a steely (aluminum-y?) determination behind her signature big smile: As a multi-tasking teacher of English language learners, sign painting artist, and photographer, she found creating a work from cans to be a new and demanding task that encompassed a month of her time.

"I have a background in interior design, and I love drawing, painting, photography, and – now – can art," explains the 38-year-old. She adds, "I have a two-can-a-day habit of Red Bull, and I was happy to finally have something to do with all the cans that are piled up in my recycle bin." In total, Sheehan incorporated about twenty-five cans in her entry, using basic tools and some innovative adhesion techniques to produce the work's final, hip-shaking effect. The resulting emotions, for this artist, are pure mahalo. Sheehan states, "I am extremely excited and thankful to have been chosen to have my work displayed!"
