Las Vegas, NV

"Creativity is a wonderful outlet in life," says Sarah Solowy. "Nothing about art is an absolute; interpretation of artwork is shaped by life experiences and is unique to each individual." Solowy's own life experiences have long involved art – her mother makes pottery, her father creates custom Shaker pieces in wood, and her aunt was an art teacher who helped young Sarah create everything from homemade paper to sand-cast sculpture. Today Solowy is a project manager and autoCAD engineer for a Las Vegas-area company that produces exhibits for tradeshow and marketing needs, and she heard about Red Bull Art of Can on the job.

Her intricate entry, inspired by the comedy and tragedy masks of ancient Greek theater, takes the typically flat art of mosaic to three dimensions. Working with a simple office hole punch, Solowy found the multi-week endeavor to be more tedious than some of her other current and past projects, like creating jewelry and large-scale metal works, but she takes satisfaction from the end result. "I was incredibly pleased that once finished, the material used to create the piece was not instantly recognizable. The pieces looked almost sequin-like, not as if they were a re-use of a can," she states. "I'm glad to have had the opportunity."
