This is the grave of Pierre L'Enfant. He was the Frenchman who had developed the lay-out of the new capitol city. For his services, he had to continually petition Congress for payment and he was only paid $2,394 for his labor. He died virtually penniless in 1825 and was buried in obscurity in Prince George's County, Maryland. In 1909, Congress thoughts better about it and exhumed his remains and moved them to the Rotunda of the Capitol. He was then buried in Arlington.
