Pierre L'Enfant was the Frenchman who had designed Washington DC. Never paid for his efforts, he died penniless and was buried in a pauper's grave in Maryland. It was only after Arlington Cemetery was formed that we felt a little guilty about that and moved his burial site to be here, giving his site a view of the city he helped create. |
