Quartermaster General Montgomery Meigs established the first Tomb of Unknown at Arlington National Cemetery in September 1866. Located near the Rose Garden of the Arlington House in Section 26, the monument stands atop a vault containing the remains of 2,111 soldiers, possibly including Confederates, recovered from the battlefields around northern Virginia.
