Existing comment: National Cemeteries in America and Abroad:
The first national cemeteries were established during the American Civil War (1861-1865). As of May 2014, there are 146 national cemeteries in the United States, including ones run by the US Army (such as Arlington National Cemetery), as well as the Department of Veterans Affairs, and National Park Service. The American Battle Monuments Commission, a United States government agency created by Congress in 1923, runs twenty-four American military cemeteries overseas.
