Charette, a native of Ludington, Michigan, served as a Navy corpsman who volunteered for duty in Korea. On March 27, 1953, he earned the Medal of Honor for his actions during an enemy attack on a US Marine outpost. The only Navy Medal of Honor recipient to survive the war, he had the honor of choosing the World War II Unknown aboard the USS Canberra on May 26, 1958.
