General John A. Logan (1868):
Logan fought during the US Mexican War (1846-1848) and served as a general in the US Army during the Civil War. He was also a congressman and senator from Illinois. While serving as the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a Civil War veterans' organization, he issued General Order 11, declaring May 30 as Decoration Day. He is buried at the Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery, in Washington DC. |
