1921:
The Interment of The World War I Unknown
The Unknown Soldier arrived at the Washington Navy Yard on November 9, 1921. Transported to the US Capitol Building, the remains laid in state in the Rotunda, guarded twenty-four hours a day by a joint honor guard. On November 11, the casket was placed on a caisson (artillery ammunition wagon) to begin its final journey to Arlington National Cemetery.
An honor guard placed the casket on the apse, from the Greek meaning arch or vault, in the Memorial Amphitheater. After the service, presided over by President Warren G Harding, they placed the Unknown into his tomb, lined with soil from France. A bugler sounded taps, and after the last note an artillery battery fired a twenty-one gun final salute. |
