Reproducing Cartoons in Newspapers:
The original drawings on display are much larger than they appeared in newspapers. To reproduce a cartoon for publication in the newspaper during much of Berryman's era, the original was photographed and a negative was made. The negative was then projected onto an engraving plate and reduced to fit the allotted space in the newspaper. An engraver traced the image onto a printing plate by etching the metal with powder or acid. The plate was then used to print the image. |
