Existing comment: This is the Wilmer McLean home at Appomattox. McLean had been in Manassas during First Bull Run and had moved down here to be safe from the war. It didn't work out that way. The house itself was dismantled right after the war with thoughts of having it go on tour like Grant's headquarters had from City Point. But funding wasn't available and the house basically rotted in the front yard. The park service rebuilt it when the area was declared a national historic site.
