Change Can Happen
This cartoon is imbued with hope, a tone that pervades many of Tony Auth's cartoons. Gay marriage had only recently been deemed legal in Massachusetts when Auth drew this cartoon that spotlights the topic. He situates it visually within the context of others' struggles for equal civil and human rights. Starting in the 1970s, Auth publicly advocated for gay rights and championed other constituencies' causes as well. His bold use of black space and strong graphic lines dramatically reinforce the idea of progression. |
