Cartoonist and Artist
Plying his brush to finish a cartoon, Herblock is immersed in making his artwork at the Washington Post where he became its editorial cartoonist in 1946. From that point on, he focused steadily on cartooning day after day, first winning the Heywood Broun Award in 1949 for outstanding journalistic achievement from founder of the American Newspaper Guild. Broun believed that social ills could be exposed and perhaps remedied by journalists. Herblock subsequently won many additional prestigious awards throughout his career at the Post, from which he never retired. He mentored many cartoonists and influenced the work of future generations. |
