Land Deed of Mother Bethel, AME Church:
This deed shows that free African Americans owned Mother Bethel and the land it stood on. This strengthened the position of free blacks in Philadelphia and provided capital to finance community ventures. Land ownership meant power -- landowning free black men held the right to vote until 1838. |
