Existing comment: Venetia
in Braun & Hogenburg, Civitates Orbis Terrarum, 1612
One of the earliest printed views of Venice from a multi-volume atlas of city views. This plan includes a keyed index of churches and of "the most notable things" in the city. Item 44 refers to the "ghetto where the Jews are," although this number is hard to locate on the map itself. The plan also contains a brightly colored vignette of the civil and ecclesiastical notables of hte city. This is one of many lavish color city views and plans in an ambitious, multivolume atlas including Europe, America, and the Near East. The work was the product of several contributors. Many of the city plans incorporate a sense of perspective reflecting the latest in Renaissance cartographic technology as well as the visual aesthetic of the age.
