Kuniyoshi Christmas card, mailed from Japan, to Reginald Marsh, 1931

In 1931, Kuniyoshi traveled to Japan to tend to his ailing father and work on an exhibition. This was Kuniyoshi's first trip to Japan since his departure in 1906. While there, Kuniyoshi observed Japanese brushwork techniques and befriended local artists. Back in the United States, he remained in touch with his new friends, swapping details no the creative happenings in each country.
