September 11, 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the attacks of 9/11. At the time of the attack, I was home in my basement working on pictures from a just-completed trip to New England. I didn't know of the attacks until the afternoon and felt very disconnected with the whole thing. I took the train up to New York twelve days after the attacks to experience the ruins of the World Trade Center myself. They were still putting out fires and such. This was one of the pictures from that trip.

On the twentieth anniversary of the attacks, economists estimate the attacks cost the United States $8 trillion in terms of just the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Economic costs here have been in the hundreds of billions on dollars. And a half million people have been killed in the wars.
