Galley and Mess Decks:
Mess Management Specialist (MS) was responsible for the administration of the galleys. The Master-at-Arms (MAA) would line the crew up behind the doorway of the after passageway. As soon as the cooks were ready, he would send 43 men. Each man would have 10-15 minutes to eat. As soon as he saw a man finish, he would send another in. Each meal would take 1 hour and a half to complete. The hours were: Breakfast 0615-0730, Lunch 1115-1300, Supper 1715-1830.
The mess decks is the largest enclosed space onboard and was utilized as a recreational center after meal hours so the crew could write letters, play cards or hang out. The crew normally had a movie played weekday evenings at 2000. In the event of massive casualties, the tables can be lifted out and racks can be put in place of the tables.
