I went up the Washington Monument the other day, a couple of days after it reopened again. One of the things you notice from up there is this sickle-shaped wall. It's the 17th Street flood wall, designed to help protect downtown DC from flooding. Every year, they test the wall by erecting posts and panels which are supposed to block water at 19 feet above sea level.
DC has flooded five times since 1900 and everyone realizes these will get worse as sea levels continue to rise. After the last flood in 2006, they started installing the wall in 2011 and it stands ready.
This is something to think about during this week's climate marches. Planners, both civilian and military, have been taking steps to deal with the inevitable problems of climate change whether Republicans are willing to deal with the issue or not. These are just band-aid approaches though. It's going to get a whole lot worse.
