Tributes in Stone

The Washington Monument is made from thousands of separate stones -- all fitting together as one. These 193 stones, lining the monument's stairwell, symbolize the idea: "Out of Many, One." Early on, the Washington National Monument Society asked for donations of these carved stones to honor the first president. States, cities, countries, and civic groups sent stones. Contributing a commemorative stone was a very special way to be part of this world-famous monument.
