In 1929, Henry Francis du Pont planned a major enlargement of his house and commissioned his lifelong friend, landscape architect Marian Coffin, to design his garden. Like many designers of the "country house" era, Coffin was inspired by the symmetry, proportions and architectural features of Italian Renaissance gardens. |
