King George VI and Queen Elizabeth were the first reigning British monarchs to visit the White House. Before their arrival, their aides made a number of special requests. They asked that ham sandwiches be available should the royal couple return after midnight and requested a "very soft eider down quilt, which can be accordion-pleated at the foot of the bed."
