Architect John Carl Warnecke redesigns Lafayette Park. As part of the historic preservation movement spearheaded by President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy (1961-63), Warnecke's plan also protects the historic character of the surrounding buildings.

1970:
Lafayette Park and the surrounding buildings are designated a National Historic Landmark District.

1995:
After many appeals from the Secret Service, Pennsylvania Avenue is closed to public vehicular traffic in front of the White House. It is now a pedestrian street.
