Outside the White House:
Although the White House has more 100 rooms, presidents sometimes need more space to entertain guests.
Fortunately, the president and his family have a large lawn. Presidents use the White House grounds as a stage for performances and a reception area for greeting guests. Fanfare and pageantry surround many events, including an aviator's dramatic landing on the South Lawn in 1911 and the arrival of the 2002 Olympic torch. The intimate gardens provide a beautiful setting for receptions and dinners, while the expansive grounds have witnesses picnics, concerts, and even T-ball games.
