The Voice of Democracy:
From paper and quill pens to the latest computers, the White House has adapted to changes in communications technology. Early presidents had to rely on letters, personal reports, or newspaper accounts to communicate wit the country. News traveled more quickly after President Andrew Johnson (1865-69) added a White House telegraph room in 1866. Twentieth-century presidents adopted mass media radio and television to reach a wider audience. The White House joined the internet revolution in 1994 with the launch of its first website under President William J. Clinton (1993-2001).
