A Public Office:
The White House may be the president's office, but it belongs to the American people.
Keeping the people informed about presidential decisions is a cornerstone of American democracy. But the president also needs to listen to what people are saying. Throughout much of the 19th century, visitors could simply walk into the White House and ask to meet with the president. Security concerns have since ended such easy access, but the public can still contact the White House through telephone calls, letters, and e-mails. They can also add their voices to public protests and demonstrations.
