Bushes

Squawbush (rhus tri-lobata)

Look for the alternate compound leaves of three leaflets. The fresh leaves have a pungent odor and dark green color. By fall the leaves shown bright orange and scarlet. The sour tasting edible berries are also boiled to make a dark red colored dye.

Rabbitbrush (genus chrysothamnus)

The many local varieties of this hardy lowgrowing brush provide shelter and food for rabbits. Look for the yellow flowers that appear in late summer and produce a yellow dye. See the stems that yield a green color fabric dye.
