Old Box Elder Tree
Look for the damaged main trunk of this old tree. See the side shoots now grown large and branching in horizontal directions. The box elder (acer negundo) belongs to the maple family. See the three leaflets on each leaf.
Sweet-starved, early settlers introduced box elder trees to tap their sweet sap. The sap was gathered and boiled into syrup and brownish white sugar. |
