What's happening to the statue?

The National Park Service is preserving the statue of George Washington during the spring and summer of 2020.
We will clean the bronze statue to return the patina back to its original medium brown, then apply a hot wax coating. We will also clean the marble base, repoint the mortar joints, and repair cracks.
The Washington Statue memorializes George Washington during the Battle of Princeton. Clark Mills designed the equestrian statue in 1860. Mills also sculpted the statues of Andrew Jackson in Lafayette Square and New Orleans and cast the Statue of Freedom atop the US Capitol.
