Boundary Markers and Border Barriers on the US-Mexico Border

1933
The Rio Grande Rectification Project is a cooperative agreement between the US and Mexico to straighten and maintain the river boundary between the two nations in the El Paso-Juarez area.

1940s
The Western Land Boundary Fence Project funds the first significant stretches of border fence. The government constructs 237 miles of fencing in select areas between El Paso/Juarez and the Pacific coast, built to control both people and cows. The project is led by the International Boundary & Water Commission, working with the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the Bureau of Animal Industry, the National Park Service, and private contractors.
Barrier Type: Ranch fencing in remote areas (BAI); chain-link fencing near ports of entry to deter people from crossing without inspection. Fences built 8'-10' tall topped with barbed wire and sometimes enhanced with lightning (INS). Some fencing transferred from the Japanese internment camp in Crystal City, Texas (INS).
