The Volta Bureau, which faces Georgetown University, was built and maintained by money from Alexander Graham Bell. Located across the street from where Bell's parents lived and where Bell maintained his lab, the ground for this building was broken in ceremonies in 1893. The first shovelful of dirt was thrown by twelve-year-old Helen Keller. The building houses the American Association for the Teaching of Speech to the Deaf. (Bell felt the deaf needed to be able to speak to actually fit into society.)
