The Wealth of the Nation:
Here, the artist captured the continuing social transformation by depicting various types of knowledge-based employment such as scientist and architect while acknowledging the contributions of the industrial worker and machinist to the wealth of the nation. Fogel's figures are not understood as unique individuals but as symbols of the human resources that contribute to the growing prosperity of the citizens and the wealth of the nation. While Shahn painted personalities he had photographed across America, Fogel painted the human figures as symbols for ideas.
