Between 1885 and 1941, this was the site of the R.E. Lee Camp Confederate Soldiers' Home -- the nation's first successful and longest operating residential complex for south veterans. It was not the first such facility (a home opened in Kentucky in 1881 but closed two years later). Sixteen additional Confederate soldiers' homes were established in other states, but few achieved the Richmond Institution's renown.
