Rockwell Kent
Twilight of Man, 1926
Rockwell Kent became known in the 1920s and '30s for his romantic, stylized illustrations of works by famous authors, including Shakespeare, Melville, and Whitman. In turn, Kent's imaginative engravings inspired contemporary writers. This powerful wood engraving, which touches on the mystical theme of human existence, prompted the following verse:

Let the cold claim the body''s valiant riot,
And touch the urgent hands to bitter peace:
From the bold peak of darkness only quiet
Must answers quiet, only life must cease.

-- Marjorie Meeker, "For Rockwell Kent's Twilight of Man", Poetry, November 1927
