Childe Hassam
Fifth Avenue Noon, 1916
In the early 20th century, Childe Hassam -- who had made his reputation as an American impressionist painter -- turned his focus to printmaking. Quickly mastering the etching medium, he produced what one critic called "portraits of places." With skilled strokes of the etcher's needle in this work, he captured a steady stream of pedestrians, carriages, and automobiles making their way down the massive architectural canyon of Fifth Avenue in New York City.
