Frederick Landseer Maur Griggs
The Almonry, 1925
This image, considered Griggs's masterpiece, was the result of several months of painstaking work on a single copper plate. The view is focused on a church's almonry where the poor received alms, but the soaring gothic forms of the cathedral dominate the scene. Griggs's depiction of the intricate architectural details blanketed in snow showcases both his mastery of etching technique as well as his skill in creating an evocative and atmospheric composition. Considered a senior member of the group of etchers active in England in the 1920s and '30s, Griggs was an important mentor to artists such as Paul Drury and Robin Tanner.
