James McBey
Dawn: The Camel Patrol Setting Out, 1919
McBey enlisted in the British army in 1916, and after producing works based on his experiences at the Somme, he was named an Official War Artist. In 1917, he was sent to Egypt and Palestine where he recorded the particularities of desert combat, such as this Australian army patrol setting out on camelback. McBey was fascinated by the desert landscape and eventually settled in Tangier, Morocco. |
