Emile Just Bachelet
Venus and Love, ca 1934
Ivory was a significant import for European countries, mostly Belgium and France, that had colonies in Africa. Emile Just Bachelet, who is celebrated for his life-size sculptures of animals carved in stone and bronze, also made objects in ivory. In this example, Bachelet preserved the form of the tusk and skillfully carved it into a nude Venus holding a small figure of Love. This sculpture was displayed in Paris in 1934 at the 24th Salon of the Society of Artists-Decorators and later in their pavilion at the 1937 International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques in Paris.
