Twentieth-Century Exploration

Lieutenant (later Admiral) Richard Evelyn Byrd, Jr., was reputedly the first man to fly over the North Pole in May 1926. He and his crew were undoubtedly the first to fly over the South Pole in November 1929. Byrd's expeditions were funded by wealthy investors, just as the Virginia Company of London had been in 1607.
