The descendents of William Byrd II influenced Virginia history in the twentieth century. As governor and U.S. senator, Harry Flood Byrd became the dominant force in Virginia politics from 1920 to 1960. Byrd promoted conservative "pay-as-you-go" financial policies. His brother, Richard, gained fame as a polar explorer. |
