Monitoring air quality is critical to the safety of miners.
Canaries were used in coal mines to detect the presence of carbon monoxide. Their rapid breathing rate, small size, and high metabolism made them more sensitive to dangerous air quality, and their distress or death was a signal to miners to vacate a gas-filled mine. The anemometer is used to measure the flow of air entering and exiting the mine. |
