Lt. Elisha Ray Nance
b 26 June 1914 / d 19 April 2009

The son of a Bedford County tobacco farmer, Nance joined the National Guard during the depression. On June 6, 1944, he landed in the first wave on Omaha Beach. Wounded twice, he was the only officer in his company to survive the assault. In December 1944, he returned home and worked as a postal carrier. At the time of his death, Nance was the last surviving "Bedford Boy."
