Mary Sue Terry
b 28 September 1947

In 1986, more than a million voters elected Mary Sue Terry of Patrick County as attorney general. After assigning in 1993, she became the first and only Virginia woman nominated for governor. Despite her early lead, she lost to Republican George Allen. Ultra-conservative voters disliked her stance on gun control and feared that, as a single woman, she would not prioritize family issues.
