Everyday Virginians and the Civil Rights Movement
Motivated by national leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr. everyday Virginians put themselves on the front lines in the battle against segregation. Ruth Tinsley (above) was arrested outside Thalhimers department store in Richmond, and Life magazine used her image on the cover of their issue about segregation. Dorothy Bigelow Hamm, whose button appears here, organized local efforts, raised funds, and attended rallies.
