In 1969, A. Linwood Holton was elected as the first Republican governor of Virginia since 1869. The following year, when forced busing was an issue in Virginia, Holton enrolled his children in predominantly black Richmond City schools. After Holton was photographed walking his daughter, Tayloe, into Kennedy High School, he became known nationally as a symbolic supporter of federally mandated integration. |
