Electric iron, about 1912
Before electricity, ironing clothes was a laborious, time-consuming job.

This 1912 electric iron is an improvement on pre-electric ones that were heated on stoves or fires. Non-electric irons -- called "sad irons" by the women who used them -- were heavy, lost their heat quickly, and could burn fabric.
